School Extension, Braintree, Essex

This extension has provided additional teaching space and improvements to circulation within one of Braintree’s most modern school campuses.

The circular plan shape and monopitched roof, developed as part of the architect’s conceptual design, presented many engineering challenges which were eventually resolved into a comparatively simple steel frame which was erected quickly and easily on site.

A steel framed link bridge was also constructed so as to link two adjacent ‘wings’ of the existing building and improve circulation and access through the school.

The school staff were delighted with the results, commenting on how congestion in corridors has been reduced between lessons as well as the benefits of teaching in radial (rather than rectangular) classrooms.
